Kandy's central location, 100 km from Colombo, is ideal in that it allows for stopovers on the way to almost any part of the country, and also give visitors a glimpse of the ancient town and its surroundings. Many of the landmarks and sites are in close proximity to the town centre, with notable places to visit between 30 to 40 minutes away, on the high side. Take in culture, heritage and history with sites such as the Sacred Temple of the Tooth, the Kandy Lake, Peradeniya Botanical Gardens, Bahirawakanda Buddha statue, and several ancient temples such as Embekke, Lankathilaka and Gadaladeniya. The Udawattakele forest reserve is also in the town itself and is a must-see for nature enthusiasts.
